Plant

Stem, leaf and bud dark purplish. Dark green ovary.

Flowers

Deep purplish blue. Column base mauve, with red or indigo band then bright yellow top with a deep oval cleft. Margin not rolled. Straight column arms with sparse white cilia.

Flowering

October - November, opening rarely in still, warm conditions.

Habitat

Lowland damp scrub and tracksides. Kaitaia northwards.

Conservation

Scattered plants, not threatened

Notes

Differing from T. pauciflora and T. “Ahipara” in the dark colours, oval cleft and thin margin to the column top. Voucher specimen (CHR518036; “darkie)

Key features

Dark leaves, stems and flowers, column pale mauve with dark band rounded at the top. Top with a deep, narrow cleft tipped with a broad, yellow band.
