Bird orchids

Chiloglottis cornuta

Green Bird Orchid

Habitat: Scrub and well lit forest from lowland to alpine; common in mature pine forests. Throughout.

Key features: Pair of broad green leaves and large flower, a few large bead like, shiny calli on labellum.

Chiloglottis valida

Large Bird Orchid

Habitat: Under Corsican pine at Iwitahi and Hanmer; also Nelson, Fiordland, Wakatipu.

Key features: Dark flower with broad petals and few tall calli.

Chiloglottis trapeziformis

Broad-Lip Bird Orchid

Habitat: Known naturally only from pine forests on the Horowhenua coast but transplanted to Iwitahi.

Key features: Flower tinged maroon; mass of large, dark maroon calli on the midlobe.

Chiloglottis formicifera

Ant Orchid

Habitat: Known only from near Kaitaia over a century ago.

Key features: Labellum appearing to hold a wasp.

Caleana minor

Flying Duck Orchid

Habitat: Warm places in flat open areas of fine sands with very low fertility.

Key features: Very distinct flower shape.
