Myrmechila trapeziformis
Syn: Chiloglottis trapeziformis Broad-Lip Bird Orchid PLANT: Terrestrial tuberous herb.
Slender. Up to 9cm high when in flower. Stem red to green. LEAVES: Two oblong leaves, 3 - 5cm long, with usually smooth but sometimes wavy margins.
FLOWER: Solitary. 1 - 1.5cm across, upfacing. Brown to purple-green in colour. Kite shaped labellum with dark, tuberculate to stalked calli which do not extend to the labellum margin & leave the labellar tip bare. Variable small pink calli near the column.
FLOWERING TIME: November - December.
HABITAT: Exotic Pine forest.
CONSERVATION STATUS: Non-Resident Native - Vagrant.
NOTES: One colony found beneath a Pine forest near Levin, which has now been milled. Transplanted to various sites in the North Island including the Iwitahi Orchid Reserve. |
