Hymenochilus tanypodus

PLANT: Terrestrial tuberous herb.
Tiny. To 10cm high.

LEAVES: Basal rosette of oval blue-green leaves. Stem covered in sheathing leaves.

FLOWERS: 1 - 7 flowers, each 10mm high. Striped green and white. Dorsal sepal short and broad. Lateral sepals join together and point downward. Distinguished from Hymenochilus tristis by a large outward projecting knob at the base of the labellum, and the lack of any tiny teeth along the petal edges.

FLOWERING TIME: December - January.

HABITAT: Montane grassland and shingly open places such
as river terraces in the South Island.

CONSERVATION STATUS: Not Threatened - Uncommon.

NOTES: Easily overlooked due to its diminutive size.
